Digital Storytelling AAR

What I liked about the digital storytelling sessions?

  • Learned something valuable and looking forward to future
  • Liked different ideas and techniques in stories
  • Able to express messages big time with digital stories
  • Within a very short time you can get an idea, access and share knowledge
  • Training – within 24 hours we had products and new skills
  • Liked atmosphere/environment, ongoing translation
  • Discovered something new on my computer (Kawive)
  • Discovered new, easy to use tools
  • Liked small group
  • Training style made it easy for everyone to do a digital story
  • Top quality outputs produced quickly and safely
  • Short time requested to make a video
  • Riff took us where he wanted to go, but in a nice way
  • Start of training, showing movies from previous workshops which was encouraging
  • Not tough trainers, participatory style
  • Emphasis on “I” (personal story)
  • Liked time constraint, forced us to move quickly and solve problems
  • Everything
  • Availability of organizing committee
  • Trainers could not communicate in French, yet there were excellent Franco-phone stories
  • Initially confused, then excited to produce something and have a very good communication/knowledge sharing tool
  • New skills can be shared with others
  • Did a tactical approach, very short explanations, most time hands-on work and coaching
  • Liked simplicity and easy doing facilitation
  • Didn’t think about Francophone from the start e.g if Francois would not have been here, Victorine would not have been able to do something
  • People had fun 
  • Seeing everyone’s movies
  • Everyone helped each other
  • People were willing to experiment
  • Able to finish on time
  • Great to see motivation and commitment

What I did not like?

  • Moviemaker was frustrating (hanging, reboot, e.t.c)
  • Poor location of facilities (log to far away)
  • Time so short
  • Pity that sound quality was not so good in some cases
  • Not enough info about image quality
  • Did not use storyboard form
  • No opportunity to talk/think about political choices we are making as we build stories
  • Didn’t work together online in advance
  • Could not point to flickr for some photos

What I would do different next time?

  • Pay more attention to ensure sound quality
  • Increase attention to picture quality e.g guidelines, picture size
  • Raise copyright issues at beginning so peoples can think ahead
  • Emphasize need to frequently save files
  • Possibly indicate sources of copyright-free content
  • Not record directly into windows movie maker
  • Prepare more online
